Read moreThe timing belt is responsible for ensuring moving parts of the engine operate in harmony and do not collide with each other.
The TIMING BELT, also known as a cam belt, is a reinforced, toothed rubber belt which is propelled by the engine crankshaft and drives the camshaft which in turn opens the valves of the engine. The TIMING BELT bears a very high load in the engine, and being rubber, perishes with age, heat and exposure to chemicals.
As the TIMING BELT is under plastic covers to protect it from damage, it is often neglected, as it cannot be seen without removing the covers and other components.
Most car manufacturers recommend replacing the TIMING BELT between 60,000 and 100,000 kms. A damaged belt may break or the drive teeth may strip, causing the camshaft in the engine to stop rotating leaving some valves open. This can then result in the crankshaft pushing the pistons into the valves and bending them. That is if you are lucky and worse problems are not the result.
IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHEN YOUR TIMING BELT WAS LAST REPLACED, WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU BOOK IN TO HAVE IT CHECKED OR REPLACED.
The cost to replace the TIMING BELT is a fraction of the cost of repairing major engine damage, as well as having your car off the road for a couple of days minimum.
